6 Natural Oils with SPF

Oils with natural SPF properties can offer some degree of sun protection due to the naturally occurring presence of certain compounds that act as sunscreens.

It is however, essential to understand that the SPF values are relatively low compared to those in commercial sunscreens. Therefore, they should not be relied upon as the sole method of sun protection, especially for prolonged or intense exposure to sunlight. Instead, consider using them as an additional layer of protection in combination with other sun-safe practices.

Here are some natural oils with SPF properties:

Coconut Oil (SPF around 4-5):


Coconut oil is a popular natural moisturizer with some inherent sun-protective properties. It contains medium-chain fatty acids, such as lauric acid, which offer a small degree of UV protection. However, the SPF value of coconut oil is relatively low, so it should be used in conjunction with other forms of sun protection.

Raspberry Seed Oil (SPF around 25-50):


Raspberry seed oil is known for its rich antioxidant content and its ability to provide significant sun protection. It contains a high level of ellagic acid and tocopherols, which can absorb and scatter UV radiation, offering an SPF range of approximately 25-50. This makes raspberry seed oil one of the most effective natural oils for sun protection.

Carrot Seed Oil (SPF around 35-40):


Carrot seed oil is derived from the seeds of the carrot plant and contains carotenoids, particularly beta-carotene, which provide natural sun protection. This oil has an SPF value of about 35-40, making it an excellent addition to natural sun care products.

Wheatgerm Oil (SPF around 20):


Wheatgerm oil is a rich source of vitamin E, which has antioxidant properties and can help protect the skin from UV damage. It has an SPF of around 20, making it useful for mild sun exposure, but it should not be relied upon for extended periods of time in direct sunlight.

Jojoba Oil (SPF around 4):


Jojoba oil is well-known for its moisturising properties and skin affinity. While it doesn't offer high SPF protection, it can provide a small amount of sun protection, with an SPF of around 4. Olive Oil (SPF around 2-8):


Olive oil has been used for centuries for various skin benefits, and it does offer a minimal level of sun protection, with an SPF of around 2-8. However, like other oils, it should be combined with other protective measures for adequate sun safety.

Please bear in mind that oils with naturally occurring SPF properties are not water-resistant, and their effectiveness may vary depending on factors such as the individual's skin type, the amount applied, and sun exposure duration.
