Fashion x Music Culture: Taz

An interview with a young creative, hear his story & check him out

So, Who are you, what do you do?

So my name is Tariq also known as Taz, I’m from northwest London but my origin is Ugandan, I’m a producer amongst other things. Music is something I’ve been into for quite a while now however personally I’ve only been producing for less than a year now.

What got you into producing?

Music has always been something I was influenced by even as a child. In primary school, I would always beat box and people would dig it but at the time it was just something to do. Years went by and It reached the point where my brother who was back in Uganda at the time spoke to me and told me he had started pursuing music and he was getting into it, fast-forward a couple years later he returns to the UK and we get together with a friend and SBA starts producing for himself and I was just that guy always in the studio listening, giving my ideas and feedback on whatever I could to the souls, but then our friend went to Ethiopia and the music gets put on hold. It was at that point I decided that I was going to do my own thing, so I went out and bought the equipment for my set up and just started self-teaching myself which brings me to the point I’m at now really – working to get the right sound and the right tracks for us to put out.

Where would you say that you draw your fashion inspiration from?

I would say that Pharell is one of them, I like a lot of his old school stuff, that’s what got me into fashion like the whole bape and billionaire boys club movement and even some of his more recent stuff like the collaboration with Adidas originals.

Kanye, to me is an all-round inspiration as I’m also into music so I can relate to him in a lot of ways as a young aspiring/up and coming Producer. I would say he’s a person that has tried to innovate and push forward the culture as far as music and fashion, so a lot of his work has gotten me into being a bit more conscious of thinking a certain way and of what I wear or how I’m going to portray my music and even myself in general.

I can see that a few of your fashion inspirations are in the music industry, whats your view on the influence that music has in the fashion industry?

I think the two cultures mesh together, the music you listen to is having an influence on your attitude and is giving you the vision of who you want to be and how you want to be seen so I do think that the fashion and music industry are somewhat intertwined.

What's your strategy when shopping, would you say that you have a pre-existing vision of what you want or do you try to keep up with the current seasons trends?

I always kind of know what I do want so I’m pretty much going based off stuff that I’ve wanted in the past and stuff that I don’t have but would look good with what I already have currently but at the same time when I go shopping I kind of look at the materials and how they feel even though they might look good I’ve always got to make sure that I’ve touched them just to get the feel.

You get a call from some friends inviting you to a motive right now, what is your go to item?

Right now I'm loving camo pants, I’ve got a few different colours, today im wearing the yellow ones, but I’ve also got them in green and red so I always put them in rotation. I think the green ones are probably one of the more go to ones though as they’re the most casual.
